Cleaning out a room can be a big undertaking when you want to get rid of just about everything. Clearing out several rooms at once is an even bigger task, especially when there’s large furniture that needs to go. In New Jersey, a dumpster rental is a popular option when homeowners or business owners set about renovating rooms and clearing out spaces.

However, a dumpster isn’t something that just any type of garbage or any unwanted, old furnishings can be carted off. Therefore, it’s important to know about the specifics of renting a dumpster in New Jersey dumpster, such as what can be put in a dumpster and how much space is necessary to accommodate your project.

How to Rent a Dumpster in New Jersey

Pricing on your Dumpster Can Depend on the Following Variables:

  • Your Location – Dumping in New Jersey is restricted to the same county your dumpster rental is located in)
  • Size of the Dumpster – 10 yd, 20 yd, 30 yd and 40 yd.
  • Materials – Disposing of recyclable material such as concrete may reduce your cost compared to other types of waste.

So it is always important to get a custom quote when renting a dumpster.

Dumpster Rentals at Hometown Waste

Hometown Waste & Recycling Services Inc. offers dumpster rental in New Jersey for residents and businesses in Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Union and other counties.

Payments are accepted via COD, MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express, but not by personal check. Payments are taken up front and there are no additional charges as long as the dumpster does not exceed the height or weight requirements. A dump ticket will be provided to you to show proof of weight.

To make the hauling process as easy as possible, we ask that you fill the dumpster evenly. Loads that exceed the height of the dumpster walls must be reorganized before we’ll haul them away. Dumpster heights cannot be exceeded, so it’s important to verify the proper dumpster size in advance of a given task.

Hometown Waste is more than happy to help you select the dumpster that is right for your project.

What Can I Put in a Dumpster?

You can basically put anything into a dumpster that isn’t toxic, flammable, or hazardous waste. The answer is yes — as long as none of the objects exceed the height of the dumpster walls.

When a person clears out a bedroom, for example, they will often haul away a mattress, carpet, dresser, desk and chair, along with boxes full of paper. Elsewhere, someone renting a larger dumpster could use it to cart off a sofa, loveseat, coffee table, shelves, cabinet and mirrors. Just be sure nothing sticks up higher than the dumpster’s walls.

What Can’t I Put in a Dumpster?

While many things can simply be put in the dumpster, there are also items that shouldn’t be tossed in. Generally, this includes anything that’s flammable, toxic or electronic — examples are the types of household items you’d plug in and power, as well as products used for home cleaning. For more of a breakdown, the following items are unsuitable for carting in a dumpster:

  1. Aerosol cans. Aerosol contents are toxic and flammable. As such, aerosol cans should never be thrown in dumpsters. Even when an aerosol can is empty, the chemicals that made the contents potent are still active along the interior. As such, the only suitable way to get rid of aerosol cans is to drop them off at your nearest Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility.
  1. Appliances. Old, broken kitchen appliances are generally too big for dumpsters, but there are still other reasons not to simply throw them away. Appliances such as refrigerators and HVAC units contain substances and insulating properties that should never be dumped in a landfill. Therefore, if you have an old fridge, microwave or range you need to unload, donate it to a nearby charity or appliance recycling service.

Throw AC in Dumpster

  1. Batteries. Batteries contain chemicals that can pollute landfills and water supplies. Therefore, batteries should never be thrown into a dumpster or discarded via conventional means. When batteries run out of energy, they can be disposed of in one of two ways:
  • Drop rechargeable batteries off at RadioShack to have them recycled.
  • Take non-rechargeable alkaline batteries to a nearby HHW facility.
  1. Cleaning supplies. Barring organic formulas, regular household cleaning products contain chemicals that can cause corrosion and environmental harm. If flushed down the sink or toilet, such products could contribute to the rusting and cracking of pipes. Once released into the water, such chemicals can be hazardous to marine life. As such, household cleaning products should never be flushed or thrown into dumpsters. If you have any leftover cleaning products you no longer use, drop them off at your nearest HHW facility.
  1. Computers. Regardless of which type of computer you have — a monitor/tower combo, a touch-screen or an all-in-one — you should never dispose of it in a dumpster once you’ve upgraded to a new machine. The same applies to any peripherals that might be attached, such as keyboards, external drives, CD burners, printers or scanners. The substances found within the circuitry, such as beryllium, cadmium, lead and mercury, are all hazardous to the environment. When you need to dispose of a computer and its components, take them to your local e-waste recycling center or see if the manufacturer has a take-back program.
  1. Garden chemicals. It’s no secret that chemically formulated pesticides and herbicides are harmful to the environment. Therefore, such products shouldn’t be thrown into the dumpster because they’d ultimately end up in a landfill. For much the same reasons, chemical-based lawn or garden products should never be flushed down a sink or toilet because they’re bad for water systems and potentially hard on piping. If you need to get rid of leftover garden chemicals, give them to someone else who needs them or drop the chemicals off at an HHW facility.
  1. Hair. While you could easily throw hair into a dumpster or garbage can, there are much more productive uses for the locks from your head or the hair from your pet. Namely, plants could use the hair as fertilizer, or the Earth itself could absorb the hair as compost. If you’re cutting off long hair of at least 10 inches, donate the strands to Locks of Love, which accepts hair that isn’t peroxide treated.
  1. Home electronics. Living room electronics such as televisions, stereos and speakers should never be thrown into dumpsters due to the contents of such items. Like computers, electronics such as DVD players and TVs contain mercury, lead and various other substances that are harmful to the environment. If you need to unload an old or broken television or stereo component, drop it off at an e-waste recycling center or contact the manufacturer to see if they recycle their products.
  1. Light bulbs. Different rules apply to different types of bulbs. Halogen and incandescent light bulbs can be thrown away, but not recycled. Fluorescent bulbs, on the other hand, are toxic and should never be tossed in dumpsters. Used fluorescent lights, including CFLs, should be dropped off at a home-furnishings department store like Home Depot or IKEA. The majority of LEDs are safe to recycle. In short:
  • Halogen/incandescent bulbs: unrecyclable, throw in the dumpster.
  • Fluorescent lights: recycle, don’t put in the dumpster.
  • LED lights: recycle, don’t put in the dumpster.

Can the Dumpster Be Placed on Wood?

A lot of NJ dumpster rental users are concerned about the possibility of roads and driveways getting damaged by the weight of a dumpster. To alleviate these concerns, we provide wood planks for the rental dumpsters to be set on. Wood planks are available by request.

  • 10 yard: Roughly the size of one four-door sedan.
  • 20 yard: Roughly the size of two, back-to-back four-door sedans. 4ft tall
  • 30 yard: Roughly the size of two, back-to-back four-door sedans. 6ft tall
  • 40 yard: Roughly the size of two, back-to-back four-door sedans. 8ft tall

The walls on the 10-, 20- and 30-yard dumpsters are six feet high, while the 40-yard dumpster features walls that are eight feet high. (See above for correct height)

How Do I Know What Size I Need?

When it comes to dumpster rental in New Jersey, the size requirements for a given project can easily be correlated to the size of the property being cleaned out, as outlined below:

  • 10 yard = single-room cleanout
  • 20 yard = apartment cleanout or partial-home renovation
  • 30 yard = full-sized home cleanout or renovation
  • 40 yard = building renovation or demolition

Essentially, the smallest dumpster rental is good if you’re clearing out a bedroom or studio apartment, while 20- and 30-yard dumpsters are ideal for cleanouts of several rooms at once. The 40-yard dumpster is mostly for projects involving commercial properties.

Do I Need a Township Permit to Rent a Dumpster in New Jersey?

If you plan to have the dumpster placed on your driveway or any other part of your personal property, you won’t need a permit.

The State of New Jersey requires permits on all dumpsters parked in the streets. You must obtain a permit from your own local municipality. Reflective tape is required on all dumpsters placed on city sidewalks, streets and parking lots. New Jersey law also requires licensing and registration for all dumpster-hauling companies in the waste-hauling industry
